Haure, Joel; Baud, Jean-pierre.
A hydrobiological study coupled with the evolution of the production of cupped oysters Crassostrea gigas has been carried out from March 1990 to March 1991 on two oyster culture areas (North and South) of the Bay of Bourgneuf. - The northern area is characterized by an environment which is variable though time and composed of a high nutritive and mineral load. This high particular load (average value = 154 mg.l- 1) is linked to meteorological conditions and especially to the wind speed and direction. The individual growth of cultivated oysters is low (i.e.: 58.8 g). - The southern area shows homogenous hydrobiological characteristics throughout the year. The average phytoplanktonic biomass is 4.4 µg.l-l of chlorophyll and the particular load is low...

Haure, Joel; Baud, Jean-pierre.
A study on mortalities, growth and fattening of the oyster Crassostrea gigas was carried out spring with the autumn 1987 in four sites of bay of Bourgneuf. Mortalities, more important in spring, prove to be higher in the sectors North compared to the Southern sectors of bay of Bourgneuf. The performances of growth are rather weak when they are compared with other French oyster sectors. They however present a better production in the cattle-breeding areas located at the South of bay. The spring phase is marked by the formation of glucidic reserves, at the moment of the reheating of water, which is quickly transformed, in the majority of the sites, in lipids of reserves of the ovocytes, during the gamétogenèse. The state of fattening of Crassostrea gigas...

Baud, Jean-pierre; Hommebon, Prestal; Haure, Joel.
If clam growth is no longer an issue during the pre-growth phase in the Bourgneuf bay region, the two year growth phase shows several problems: in the south bay area, the growth of Ruditapes phi¿lippinarum clams is inconsistent and depends on oyster and mussel stocks. In fattening ponds raising standards only allow a 500g/m final biomass. This forces clam farmers to own large areas, which are currently hardly available in this region. The alternative would consist in fractioning the growth phase into two steps: half raising in tidal zones (half buried pots at 2000/ra) or in fattening ponds, under extensive conditions (200/m) or intensive (1000/m) by adding phytoplankton. Winter stocking, for all cases in fattening ponds, would prevent major stress in...

Barille-boyer, Anne-laure; Haure, Joel; Baud, Jean-pierre.
The oyster growth has been studied for a 10 year period, from 1986 to 1995, in four locations of the bay of Bourgneuf (French Atlantic Coast). The relations between oysters growth and the main molluscs stocks (cultivated oysters and wild mussels) or environmental factors (hydrobiology, currents, climatology) are analysed to understand the functioning of this shellfish ecosystem. As the water renewal time is about two months, primary production is essentially autochtonal. Phytoplankton development is controlled by the nutrients brought by the river Loire. An important part of the microalgac is composed by the microphytobenthos resuspended by west wind. High seston concentrations, measured on the North of the bay (150 mg/1 as an average), have a negative...

Baud, Jean-pierre.
Japanese clam and hollow oyster spats have been pre-grown under intensive conditions in hatcheries using underground seawater as thermal resource and as source of nutritional salts for forage seaweed production. The main parameters of this environment have been followed up and raising conditions have been controlled (spat density, seawater flow, phytoplankton concentration and temperature). The biological results obtained after interaction processing and the hierarchy of the studied parameters were the object of an economic analysis for each season, comparing different shellfish pre-growth strategies. This study finally allows us to be able to present pre-growth intensive methodology that can be passed on to the professional aquaculture industry.

Baud, Jean-pierre; Le Bayon, Nicolas; Palvadeau, Hubert.
Variability of oyster Crassostrea gigas quality was studied in winters 1995 and 1996. Landings per unit of production were estimated using the number of commercialized sanitary certification labels or/and the annual landings declared to the Veterinary Services. 998 oysters from 66 oyster farmers were described accordingly with 15 parameters easily measurable. Maximum variability like in 1995 was expressed by condition indices, macroscopic and morphologic factors. Theses results showed that reproductible and simple factors should described variability of oyster quality in the bay of Bourgneuf. However a new estimation of oyster quality should be involved in winter 1997 to acheive this study
